The universe is made up of building blocks that make more complicated things. So if we start off with a really complicated thing (like you or me) and find out what makes us then we can see what the universe is made of. So, from the top:

Humans are made up of lots of cells which do things like make our heart beat and our lungs breath.
      >>
Cells use things called proteins to do jobs inside the cells — so they keep working
      >>
Proteins are made up of amino acids which are like lego blocks that make proteins
      >>
Amino acids are made by your DNA — a set of instructions or code
      >>
DNA is made up of atoms
      >>
Atoms are made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons — tiny spheres that whizz around each other
      >>
Finally (maybe), protons, neutrons, and electrons are made up of even tinier things with crazy names like muons (you say it like mew-ons) and gluons (glue-ons)…it gets pretty confusing down there, but that’s the idea! Let me know if you have any more questions!
