Good question! It sometimes can seem like the Earth is made up of one big solid rock, but it’s actually made up of a few different parts.

A good way to describe the Earth is to imagine an onion, with lots of layers. The Earth has lots of layers too. The centre of the Earth, it’s core, is is made up of two layers, the ‘inner’ and an ‘outer’ core. These are both mainly made up of two metals called iron and nickel. The outer core is so hot that these metals are a liquid! The inner core is under so much pressure from being at the centre of the Earth that it stays solid.
Next out is a thick layer called the mantle, and then we get to the solid crust on the surface of Earth. This is made up of solid rock and is what we stand on!

So the Earth is actually made up of lots of different parts! If you want to learn more here is a useful video about our planet Earth, what it’s made of and how it was formed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGXi_9A__Vc
