The north star is the most important star to us on Earth, after the Sun that is. It’s not the biggest star in the night sky, and it’s not the brightest, but it can help us to find our way around – as it is always directly above the north pole of Earth. Once we have found north, we can find south, east and west too!

The north star isn’t it’s actual name though. It is a star called ‘Polaris’ and it is about 30 million kilometres across… That’s 46 times bigger than our Sun!

You can find the north star in the night sky by using constellations, patterns in the stars. There are two of these constellations, Ursa Major (the big bear) and Ursa Minor (the little bear) that we can use to find the north star!
