  Very good question, I’m not sure if anyone actually knows for sure but crabs have surprisingly thick exoskeletons as well as lobsters. If these creatures don’t get out of (shed) their exoskeletons when they’re young, they get trapped inside and die. Usually though they shed their young exoskeleton and grow an adult-sized one 🙂
